Signs of Septic System Failure
What to watch for and why it matters.
- Slow drains or gurgling throughout the house.
- Sewage odors indoors or in the yard.
- Soggy ground or unusually green grass over the lateral field.
- Backups into the lowest drains.
- For aerobic systems: alarm lights, cloudy or smelly spray water.
Failing systems can contaminate wells, ponds and lakes. Stop heavy water use and call a pumper or installer. Repairs or replacement require DEQ authorization and a DEQ-certified installer.
